Help & support

Frequently asked questions.

Signing up, documents, the PortSIP app, billing, handsets and support – the short answers.

01Signing up

What do I need to register an account?

Only your email address and a contact number. You also type your name and choose a password to protect your account. No documents are needed to register.

How quickly can I start calling?

Choose your service, pay online and send us your documents (see below). We then set you up. With Softphone you can start calling as soon as your setup is done – there is nothing to deliver.

02ID & proof of residence (RICA)

Why do you ask for my ID and proof of residence?

When you choose the type of service you need, we ask for a copy of your ID (or passport) and a proof of residence. We use them to verify who you are and where you live before we activate a number (in South Africa this is known as RICA).

Your number is activated only once we have received your documents.

03Softphone & the PortSIP app

Which app do I use for Softphone?

Bell-Us Softphone runs in the free PortSIP app on your smartphone. Download it here:

Bell-Us Softphone runs in the free PortSIP app. Download it on your phone to make and take calls on your Bell-Us number.

Is there a handset fee for Softphone?

No. Softphone uses your own smartphone, so there is no handset and no handset handling fee. It is instant: you can call as soon as you are set up.

04Landline handsets & the handset handling fee

What is the handset handling fee?

If you choose a cordless or physical (desk) landline handset, a once-off handset handling fee is billed once:

CountryHandset handling fee (once-off)
South AfricaR3 000
BotswanaP2 430
ZimbabweUS$180

Softphone has no handset handling fee.

Who owns the handset?

The handset and any other equipment we provide remain the property of Bell-Us. You use it for as long as you have the service. See our Terms & Conditions.

05Billing

When am I billed?

Your first payment covers any once-off fees and the rest of your first month, pro-rated from your start date. After that, services are billed in full on the 1st of every month.

Your invoices and statements are in your customer portal.

What happens if a payment fails?

We retry the payment 3 times. If it still has not been paid after the third retry, your services are suspended until the amount due is paid.
